Grow up... JUST DO IT
For the non-millennial reader, adulting basically means to go through the motions of being a responsible adult while feeling like a child, or wishing you still were one. A sentence in which it might be used is, "I converted my trapeze kit savings account into a Roth IRA. I adulted so hard today!" Being an adult comes with more complex tax forms, jury duty, pelvic and/or rectal exams, unmet health insurance deductibles, and a myriad of other party lifestyle inconveniences that require maturity to resolve. Adulting sucks, but if you don't take care of your responsibilities, someone else will have to do it for you. Unless you're an baby, preferably one with those little talon covering mittens because they are adorable, hanging onto a teat is not cool.
Stay young... PLAY
Get your recess on. Wouldn't it be grand if several times a day you could break free from your desk to play dodgeball and take cheap head shots at the people you don't like? Those beautiful days are gone, but the good news is it's becoming more socially acceptable to keep other hobbies you may have had before your first stick of deodorant. The market for cartoons, video games, board games, comic books, hula hoops, and cosplay events specifically for adults has exploded. Amazon's best selling books are self help and coloring books for adults. Maybe those two categories aren't so different. Play makes us better.
Grow up... NO COOKIE FOR YOU
I'm way too prize oriented. I voted via mail this election and was seriously disappointed I didn't get my sticker. Democratic representation wasn't its own reward. Pathetic. Participation awards are a thing of the past. We have to accept that we will receive medical treatment without lolly pops, eat our vegetables without the promise of dessert, and be good even after you find out Santa isn't going to bring you jack. Do what needs to be done because it's the right thing to do. You're building character and although hard work isn't always pleasurable, it feels amazing to discover you can rely on yourself.
Stay young... BELIEVE IN YOURSELF
Kids think they are fantastic at everything because no one has told them otherwise. They all believe they will be employed in the loftiest of professions and become astronauts, doctors, or the president. Gradually, small failures and large criticisms chip away at one's self esteem and sometimes a lack of confidence creates a lack of motivation. It's difficult to attempt something grave or new if you don't believe you can succeed. You can't be brave if you have nothing to fear. Remember what it was like to see everything as an adventure. You are still good enough to do anything. So go do it.
Whoever you are, whatever your age, you will have hard days and wish for your mommy. No one has it figured out. I promise I will do my best to be considerate of others, show up, work hard, and go to bed at a decent hour. For balance I will wear my cat head hoodie on off hours, and also tonight I'm having wine and Cheetos for dinner; that's my choice as an adult and it should be respected.
“Grown-ups don't look like grown-ups on the inside either. Outside, they're big and thoughtless and they always know what they're doing. Inside, they look just like they always have. Like they did when they were your age. Truth is, there aren't any grown-ups. Not one, in the whole wide world.”
- Neil Gaiman, The Ocean at the End of the Lane
